Business need
To identify the challenges of integrating Advanced Nuclear Technologies (ANTs) in the National Transmission System (NTS) to increase the availability of energy supply.
Overview
Frazer-Nash modelled hydrogen demand scenarios for Great Britain using data on the existing National Transmission System (NTS) infrastructure to assess the networks hydrogen transportation capability for the forecasted hydrogen demand. We then applied our geospatial multi-criteria siting approach to determine suitable locations for deployment of Advanced Nuclear Technologies (ANTs) to cogenerate hydrogen. Our site selection criteria took the requirements of the gas network, the nuclear technology providers and the end-users into account.
Our network impact analysis suggested that, with respect to gas volumes, the NTS would be capable of transporting forecasted hydrogen demand, even for the highest demand scenario in 2050. Results also demonstrated that individual ANTs hydrogen cogeneration sites would not present substantial operational issues.
