Planning and training for today’s command and control (C2) in military operations is complex. For effective situation analysis and decision making, command teams need to understand how an adversary might respond in multiple scenarios. But they have increasing volumes of data available to them that must be processed at speed.
Here at Frazer-Nash, we’ve been exploring how to improve the preparedness of C2 teams by using Artificial Intelligence (AI) in training simulations. By adding in AI-trained enemy forces into wargaming, command teams have a better understanding of how an adversary might respond to potential friendly orders, so they can make better decisions, faster.
Our innovation is helping to realise an intelligent adversary as an effective training partner for future commanders.
Predicting enemy behaviour in wargaming scenarios
Red Force Response (RFR) is our proof-of-concept decision and training support tool. It integrates AI with wargaming simulation to rapidly predict enemy Course of Action (CoA) and evaluate the effectiveness of friendly orders.
Our tool uses Red AI-trained agents that have been developed based on in-game data and reward profiles that reinforce desired behaviours and objectives. It exploits state-of-the-art reinforcement learning algorithms to promote collaboration towards common goals in a multi-agent environment.
The intelligent adversary agent can find both high performance and novel CoAs based on the reward profile, observations, and actions provided to it. We have also shown the tool is effective at evaluating mission success for different Blue Force (friendly), CoAs.
Further development could use AI to generate a force composition within a campaign success threshold, in other words, the minimum effective deployment to achieve operational success.
Our concept clearly demonstrates an effective use of AI for C2 training and planning. With further development it could be used to train military leaders to be better decision makers and improve their resilience for large and complex security problems.
