The event will enable us to collaboratively test valuable research with international experts, sharing as part of our open approach to help improve global cyber security against future threats.

Experts from Frazer-Nash Consultancy and the UK’s Defence, Science and Technology Laboratory (Dstl), will lead a presentation to world experts next week as part of the Black Hat event in the U.S.

The discussion, part of the ‘Reinforcement Learning for Autonomous Resilient Cyber Defence’ session on Thursday 8 August, will reflect collaborative work aimed at better understanding how to manage future cyber threats that include high volumes of sophisticated machine speed cyber-attacks, able to evade and overwhelm traditional cyber defenders.

Ian Miles, Managing Consultant, Frazer-Nash, will join Sara Farmer, Scientist, Dstl, to present work from 11 organisations with over 25 named contributors in a truly collaborative approach. Frazer-Nash and Dstl are part of a large body of UK Defence research extending and applying Reinforcement Learning (RL) to automated cyber defence decision making, e.g. deciding at machine speed which action(s) to take when a cyber-attack is detected.

Frazer-Nash’s work with Dstl includes leading the research and development for self-defending, self-recovering cyber defence concepts in support of the UK Ministry of Defence (MOD). Since 2022, we have been collaborating with Dstl as part of the Autonomous Resilient Cyber Defence (ARCD) project.

Craig Murphy (ARCD Technical Lead, Dstl): “Sharing our work investigating the application of AI techniques to our Cyber Security challenges at Black Hat is a terrific opportunity and we are looking forward to the feedback this will generate”.

Steve Little (ARCD Concepts Programme Lead / Frazer-Nash Cyber and Human Sciences Engineering Manager): “ARCD is a significant research project, not only for Frazer-Nash, but also for UK MOD.  We have demonstrated how machine learning can be applied to support cyber response and recovery and we are really excited to share some of our findings at a conference with the prestige of Black Hat 2025.”

Frazer-Nash has worked in the cyber security arena for more than two decades. Its security professionals protect organisations’ systems and data, analyse and mitigate cyber risk, and deliver advice and assurance, as well as using their expertise to advance holistic cyber defence that covers technology, people and processes. Black Hat USA, at the Mandalay Bay Convention Center in Las Vegas, is a 6-day programme, opening with four days of specialized cybersecurity Trainings (3-6 August), with courses for all skill levels. The two-day main conference (7-8 August) will feature more than 100 selected Briefings, networking and social events, and much more.

Founded in 1997, Black Hat is an internationally recognized cybersecurity event series providing the most technical and relevant information security research. Grown from a single annual conference to the most respected information security event series internationally, these multi-day events provide the security community with the latest cutting-edge research, developments, and trends.
