As part of our active role in the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC), we welcomed IEC delegates to our Bristol office recently. The team were there to progress a new international standard for complex system safety in defence programmes.
Defence systems are highly complex and subject to ever-changing risk. Existing safety standards are not always fit for purpose as they’re designed for single organisations rather than complicated hierarchies.
A new standard for managing risk
IEC 63187 is the new framework being developed by the IEC for complex systems in the defence sector. Scheduled for release at the end of this year, the new standard will use the latest systems engineering principles that can be tailored to specific applications and multiple system layers. It will be an open framework compatible with different national approaches to assurance and risk acceptance.
The coming together of the IEC earlier this year marks a positive step forward in the development of IEC 63187 and complements our own work on engineering safety across defence domains.
Within our Naval Assurance Group, our Principal Consultant, Darran Hunter has been recently elected to the IEC through the National Committee of the British Standards Institution. Darran will contribute to the all-important user’s perspective to the development of IEC 61387.
