Last month marked the successful completion of the A²ISR project (AI & Autonomy for the Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance Enterprise), a collaborative effort between Dstl, Frazer-Nash, and industry partners. Working as a joint team, they explored, demonstrated and advanced  cutting-edge AI and autonomy capabilities to enhance the ISR enterprise.

The A²ISR Project, sitting within Dstl’s AI Programme, was focused on:

Automating the ISR enterprise, which dynamically and opportunistically creates and prioritises ‘collect’ tasking to optimally answer a spectrum of intelligence requirements.

Demonstrating an AI-enabled approach to multi-domain intelligence analysis through collaborative human-machine teams.

Empowering the best use of available data, transitioning the constraining factor from human capacity to computational power.

A²ISR has been commended by Dstl and named as runner-up in Dstl Project of the Year Awards 2024.

Working together to deliver outcomes

As we mark the end of this dynamic project, we reflect on how genuine collaboration across teams and organisations accelerate impact in Defence Science and Technology (S&T).

By fostering a joint project office environment, we brought together the best government and industry resources to advance science and technology research outcomes at pace. This one team approach utilised our combined deep technical knowledge in A²ISR research concepts and our Project, Programme and Portfolio Management (P3M) best-practice expertise.

This enabled us to:

  • Develop a robust test & simulation environment to test, integrate and analyse A²ISR concepts and technologies within a virtual operational environment
  • Engage a supply chain of more than 20 organisations who are actively working on AI techniques and solutions.
  •  Scope partner research tasks totalling £11million across all technical concepts.
  • Share knowledge and boosting collaboration with a wide range and number of stakeholders from across defence industry through the A²ISR showcase.
  •  Develop the exploitation campaign approach to understand and propose how A²ISR concepts, science and technology enable future ISR capabilities.
